2009 Filing Deadlines

At the start of your tax planning, the most essential information to know is the tax filing deadlines. You must file by the correct deadline due date to avoid paying IRS penalties. The term "filing" simply means submitting your personal income or business information to the government, and it is not necessary to have the funds prepared to pay the taxes by this date.

Estimated tax payments are generally paid on a quarterly basis

  1. January 16, 2010, the first quarterly deadline. This only applies to those paying estimated taxes, and marks the date when any estimated taxes (balance carryover) that remain from the previous 2007 tax year must be paid.
  2. June 15, 2010, the second quarterly deadline.
  3. October, 15, 2010, the third quarterly deadline.
  4. January 15, 2011, the fourth quarterly deadline.
  5. April 16, 2010.

If you are paying your taxes on a yearly basis, which is common for most individuals, this is the big red deadline you need to remember. Before midnight on April 15, all 2009 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ tax returns must be filed.

    October 15, 2010

Sometimes individuals and/or businesses for whatever reason cannot get the paperwork together to file by the April 16 deadline. If you think this is going to happen to you, you can file for an extension on your 2009 return, which can be a much simpler and/or quicker process for intricate tax situations. If you have filed for an extension, your complete tax return must be filed by this time.

    December 31, 2010.

This is the absolute last deadline for any self-employed individuals to open up a KEOGH plan.
